Well, this year I’ve made the cutest 4th of July bunting for our little WW2 era home.  The bunting needed to look a little traditional and a little bit quirky (like us!) to be satisfactory.  I think I got it!  And, of course, that is me in the glass door because I can only concentrate on so many things at a time!Image

Along the fence in front of the house, I made the regular triangle flag bunting.  I like the result on both of them!

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t show you some cute 4th of July outfits that we have in the shop right now!

First, this adorable short and shirt set.  Linen shorts and a cotton/poly top blend beautifully for a hot summer day!

The fabulous maxi dress above is nice and light, made of lightweight polyester, so don’t wear it in the heat of the day.  AND, don’t let any firecrackers land on you!

This year, I only have one 4th of July appropriate item for men…but boy are they grand!  A pair of vintage men’s blue and white gingham pants–ready to wear and in great shape!

If you’re in a cooler climate, you may be interested in this long-sleeved red and white gingham men’s shirt as well.  Isn’t it dandy?

If you’re interested in any of these outfits (and you should be!) click on over to the shop, The Home Gnome, and check them out!

Vintage Christmas in July

Well, it’s that time again.  As if Christmas didn’t come quickly enough, we feel like we have to talk about it every July as well!  I don’t know about you, but this heat wave we’re having around here is enough to make me dream of the temperate weather of Christmas.

I have always loved vintage Christmas ornaments, decorations and doo-dads.  So, it should be no surprise that I keep The Home Gnome chock full of them as well!  We have lots of Shiny Brites, stuffed reindeer, pixies,Christmas cards, Christmas stockings, gift tags and more.

Now, these items won’t be available again until July 1st, but why don’t you just take a look and see some of the fabulous things we’ll have for you this year??

Are Monk Strap Shoes in Style?

I recently had a visitor to my etsy shop, The Home Gnome, who asked this very question. Are monk strap shoes in style? Interesting. I’ve always been a strong proponent of dressing in clothes and shoes that make you feel good about yourself. Clothes that reflect how you view yourself on the inside. For me, clothing has been a way to express who I truly am. That said, one has only to take a look back at old photos (and some new ones!) to realize that I have very often missed my own mark in the style department.

So…are monk strap shoes in style? I suppose the better question is: are they trendy right now? Well, an essential element of the monk strap shoe is the strap and buckle across the top. That’s pretty sleek which is a large element of men’s fashion right now. They have a nicely tailored look which is, thankfully, making a big comeback for men. Thank the Good Lord that men no longer feel the need to express themselves in baggy jeans/skinny jeans/t-shirts/and other atrocities but can present a polished exterior to the world and be applauded for it!

Take a look at some of these images from 1950s Teddy Boy style and tell me if you don’t approve of these gentlemen! Teddy Boy Style Images   I’m a sucker for nice suits, sharp hair and leather accessories.

Pair this gorgeous Falcone sharkskin suit with a fitted gray/purple shirt and you will look amazing wherever you go! Granted, you must be for certain this double-breasted suit is the right fit for you! I’ll do a post later on fitting men’s clothing to your features.

These are the monk strap shoes in question. The square tips and the broguing holes do date them a bit but I think they’re unique enough to hold their own in men’s right now style.

Vintage Men’s Clothing: Classic Style

How fortunate am I to have the hottest male model around, available 24/7?

Ruffled Tuxedo Shirt

He looks fabulous in vintage styles

and, he loves bunny rabbits…

James and Hyacinth, fitted white dress shirt

I’ve been on a kick lately, to find nicely fitted vintage clothing for James.  It’s hard to find–new or used!  Of course, we love the style of the clothing on BBC’s Sherlock (Spencer Hart, Dolce and Gabbana…a bit out of our price range).  Actually, those lovely clothes are out of lots of folks’ price range, so sometimes we have to make do.

Expedition Jacket

Speaking of British style, here’s the perfect expedition jacket.  Vintage styling, trim fit.  Excellent condition!

Vintage plaid shorts

Here’s a bit more of a relaxed look, while still keeping it together stylishly.  Trim fit plaid walking shorts for men.  Aren’t they nice? 🙂

Monk strap shoes

Pull the look together with these gorgeous monk strap dress shoes.  Beautiful!

All of these pieces and more (cuff links, bow ties, etc.) will soon be in the shop.  Be sure to stop by and ask about any specific items that you don’t see listed yet!

Vintage London Postcards

Found these fabulous London postcards from the 1970s this week!  Walked in to one of my favorite stores and found a giant box of postcards from the 70s and earlier.  This is just the tip of the iceberg.  Check out the shop if you’re interested in any of them.  My favorite one is the shot of Piccadilly Circus.  I wouldn’t recognize it otherwise, but it’s one of the opening images of BBC’s Sherlock

Home Gnome Vintage Picnic Weekend

Some days, it’s hard to get up the gumption to take all the photos I need to take to be in the business. The fun part is the shopping. After that, it’s all work! What with moving out of the antique mall and getting all of those items sorted, we’ve had a bit of a hectic week here at the Home Gnome. Thankfully, I found some yoga videos online and have been basking in the resulting muscle soreness.

BUT–today is the day for taking photos and putting up new listings! You’re going to love what we have new in the shop this weekend (I know I do!).

sailor girl maxi dress

Isn’t this maxi dress gorgeous?  Love how it has a definite picnic/sailor girl vibe.  The fabric is a light polyester pique, perfect for outdoor activities.  And, don’t tell anyone I said this, but this dress would be great with a shorter hemline as well!

Speaking of picnics, take a look at these fabulous little picnic baskets I just added to the shop.  There will be at least two more added.  So, if you’re in the market for vintage picnic baskets, I’m your girl!

Locally Grown Vintage

So, if you’re in Australia, and you’re looking for vintage items, come to my online shop.   Lots of you do!  If you’re in New York and you’re looking for vintage items, come to my online shop.  Just sent you something this week!  If you’re in El Paso and you’re shopping for vintage items…wait, you know what I’m going to say, don’t you?

What if you’re in Pensacola, Florida or somewhere within driving distance?  Do we ever have vintage items that are too large or too fragile too shop?  Actually, we do!  We’ve just closed up our booth at an antique mall here in Pensacola, so we don’t have a “show room” for larger vintage pieces.  What to do with them?  Well, I could post them on craigslist or feature them on Pinterest.  OR, I could let you awesome folks here see them!

I’ll list these pretties on etsy as well, available for local pick up only!

This gorgeous vintage chalkboard just went into the shop today.  It’s a fabulous find with a wooden frame, a chalk ledge and a heavy slate board!

Take a look at this precious vintage pie safe or petite hoosier.  Someone took their time to refinish pieces of it but the sweet nature of it remains!  Two upper doors, two top drawers, a fold down door and shelf, two bottom drawers and two lower doors.

James was actually able to cut some panes of glass to fit into the top doors.  It’s completely adorable now.  I can imagine this being used in so many ways!

  1. as a pie safe
  2. entertainment center (that large door folds down!)
  3. as a desk!
  4. hoosier
  5. arts and craft work station
  6. nursery piece

So many possible uses for this sweet, sweet piece of furniture!
